Bing Index Checker
The same check against Bing, which ChatGPT search reads from.
How it works
What is the Bing Index Checker?
The Bing Index Checker is a free tool that searches Bing for one page URL and reports whether that page appears in Bing's organic results. Indexed means the page came back in Bing's results. It works for any public page, including pages on sites you do not own, with no Bing Webmaster Tools access needed.
How to use the Bing Index Checker
- Paste the full URL of one page, such as https://example.com/blog/post. The tool checks that exact page, not the whole site.
- Press Check Bing index. The tool searches Bing for that exact URL.
- If the result is locked, sign in or create a free spyc account to see it. The check has already run.
- Read the status: Indexed or URL is Not Indexed, with the number of results scanned and the time of the check.
Why check Bing if my page is already in Google?
Because Bing keeps its own index, and being in Google tells you nothing about it. Bing crawls on its own schedule, and a page can rank in Google while Bing has never fetched it.
Bing's index also reaches further than Bing itself. Microsoft Copilot answers from Bing, and ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers, Bing among them, alongside OpenAI's own crawler. A page missing from Bing loses those routes into AI answers.
Does Bing read robots.txt differently from Google?
Yes, in one way that matters: Bing honours Crawl-delay, and Google ignores it. A Crawl-delay: 10 in a shared User-agent: * group slows bingbot to one request every ten seconds and has no effect on Googlebot, which is a quiet way to end up thin in Bing.
Bing also reads its own User-agent: bingbot group when one exists. Directives written in a Googlebot group never apply to it. If you need a crawl limit for Bing, put it in a bingbot group where it is easy to see. The Robots.txt Checker shows your whole file, so a stray Crawl-delay in the shared group is easy to spot.
How do I get my site indexed by Bing?
Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your XML sitemap, and submit important URLs directly. Webmaster Tools can import a site you have already verified in Google Search Console, which saves the verification step.
Bing also supports IndexNow, a protocol Microsoft and Yandex launched in 2021. You host a key file on your site and send changed URLs, up to 10,000 in one request, and participating search engines share the submission. Google does not use IndexNow.
How does this Bing index checker work?
It searches Bing for the exact URL you enter and marks the page Indexed only when that same page comes back in Bing's organic results. The query is the URL with a url: prefix, sent through a search API as a search from Austin, Texas, and the result shows how many organic results were scanned.
A page matches when its path, query string and fragment are the same as the URL you entered. A trailing slash is ignored and the host is not compared, so the https:// and www. versions of one page count as one. The Google Index Checker uses the same method, so running both on one URL compares the two indexes directly.
The status is a snapshot of one search. Bing's results for a query can shift between runs, so a page on the edge of the index may show as Indexed one day and not the next. If a result surprises you, run it again, and for your own site confirm it in URL Inspection.
The check needs no Bing account and no access to the site, so it also works for a competitor's page, or a client's site before you have Webmaster Tools access.
How do I check indexing in Bing Webmaster Tools?
Use URL Inspection in Bing Webmaster Tools, which reports whether Bing has indexed a URL on your verified site and lists any crawl or markup issues it found. It is Bing's own record, so it is the answer to trust for a site you own.
Site Explorer shows the URLs Bing knows about on your site as a folder tree, with crawl and indexing details for each, which makes it the closest Bing has to a site-wide index report. This checker covers the other case: a URL on a site you cannot verify, or a quick check without signing in to Webmaster Tools.
The Sitemaps report in Webmaster Tools lists the sitemaps Bing knows about for your site and when it last read each one. If a sitemap shows an error or has not been read in a long time, fix and resubmit it before you chase individual pages.
If the site is not verified yet, the quickest route is to import it from Google Search Console, which brings across your verified sites and their sitemaps in one step.
Which search engines use Bing's index?
Bing's index reaches several search products besides Bing itself. Yahoo's web results come from Bing, and DuckDuckGo says it sources its traditional links from several partners, most commonly Bing. Microsoft Copilot also answers from Bing.
That makes a missing Bing listing a bigger gap than Bing's own share of searches suggests. One page left out of Bing's index can be missing from all of those at once, and the fix is the same in every case: get the page into Bing.
Bing also matters more than its share suggests on Windows, where it is the default search engine in Microsoft Edge and in the Windows search box. A business whose visitors use work PCs often gets more Bing traffic than it expects.
What should I check when a page is not in Bing?
Start with whether bingbot can fetch the page at all. A firewall, CDN or bot-protection rule can turn bingbot away with a 403 while browsers load the page normally. The AI Crawler Checker requests your page as Bingbot, among other crawlers, and reports the status code it got.
Then check the page itself: a noindex tag or header, a canonical pointing at another URL, or a redirect. If all of those are clean, the page may simply be undiscovered. Submit it in Webmaster Tools or through IndexNow, and link to it from pages Bing already has.
Bing's Webmaster Guidelines also say it may leave out pages it finds thin, duplicated or of little value. A page that bingbot can reach and that is still missing usually needs more original content rather than another submission. If you submit through IndexNow, check that your key file still loads at the address you registered, because without it the submissions are not accepted.
Remember the response header as well. Bing reads X-Robots-Tag, so a noindex set by the server keeps the page out just as one in the HTML does, and it never shows in the page source.
Questions
- Does ChatGPT use Bing?
- ChatGPT search draws on Bing among other sources: OpenAI says it uses third-party search providers alongside its own
OAI-SearchBotcrawler. A page that is missing from Bing loses one of the routes into ChatGPT's answers, so it is worth checking Bing as well as Google. - Why is Bing not indexing my site?
- Bing most often skips a site it has not discovered or cannot crawl freely. Check that robots.txt does not block bingbot or slow it with
Crawl-delay, that your sitemap is declared in robots.txt and submitted in Bing Webmaster Tools, and that nonoindexsits on the pages, which the Noindex Checker tests for. - How do I submit my site to Bing for indexing?
- You submit a site to Bing through Bing Webmaster Tools: verify the site, add your sitemap, and use URL Submission for individual pages. For ongoing changes, IndexNow lets your site notify Bing automatically each time a page is added or updated.
- What is IndexNow?
- IndexNow is an open protocol that lets a site tell search engines a URL has changed, instead of waiting to be recrawled. Bing and Yandex support it, and one submission is shared among the engines that take part. Google does not use it.
- Is there a Bing indexing API?
- Bing offers a URL Submission API in Bing Webmaster Tools, and IndexNow works as an API for any site that hosts its key file. Both submit URLs for your own verified site. Neither reports the index status of a site you do not own, which is why this checker searches Bing instead.
- Does Yahoo use Bing's index?
- Yes. Yahoo's web search results are powered by Bing, so a page missing from Bing's index is usually missing from Yahoo as well. Checking Bing covers both.
- Is Bing Webmaster Tools free?
- Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools is free. You sign in, add your site and verify ownership, or import a site you have already verified in Google Search Console. It then gives you URL Inspection, sitemap submission and Bing's crawl and search reports for that site.
- How long does Bing take to index a new page?
- Bing commits to no fixed time for indexing a new page. Submitting the URL in Bing Webmaster Tools or through IndexNow tells Bing about it straight away, which is usually faster than waiting for bingbot to find the page through links or your sitemap.
