Instagram Line Break Generator

Keeps the blank lines in a caption and counts it against the 2,200-character limit.

How it works

What is the Instagram Line Break Generator?

The Instagram Line Break Generator is a free tool that keeps the spacing in an Instagram caption. Paste a caption with blank lines, and it puts an invisible character on each empty line so Instagram cannot remove it, counts characters, hashtags and mentions against Instagram's limits, and previews what shows in the feed before "more".

How to use the Instagram Line Break Generator

  1. Type or paste your caption into Your caption, with blank lines wherever you want space. Press Load sample to see a worked example.
  2. Check Characters, Hashtags and Mentions against 2,200, 5 and 20, and Blank lines kept for the number of empty lines saved.
  3. Read In the feed to see the part of the caption that shows before "more", and move your hook there if it is cut.
  4. Press Copy caption and paste it straight into Instagram.

Why does Instagram remove line breaks from captions?

Instagram drops lines that are empty, and a line break that follows a trailing space collapses too. A caption written as three short paragraphs can post as one block of text.

This generator removes the trailing spaces from every line and puts U+2800, a Braille blank, on each empty line. It is a real character that shows as nothing, so Instagram keeps the line. Blank lines at the very start and end are dropped, and every blank line between paragraphs is kept, including two or more in a row.

How do I add spaces between paragraphs in an Instagram caption?

Write the caption with an empty line wherever you want a gap, paste it here and press Copy caption. Paste the result into the caption box in Instagram and post. The blank lines hold because each one now contains a character.

The same caption works for a post, a Reel or a carousel, because the spacing is part of the text rather than a setting.

What counts toward Instagram's caption limits?

A caption can be up to 2,200 characters, with up to 5 hashtags on a post or Reel since December 2025, down from 30, and up to 20 @ mentions. Each blank line kept here adds one character toward the 2,200, and the counter includes it.

Only about the first 125 characters show in the feed before "more", so the opening line does most of the work, which is why the Instagram Caption Generator puts the hook there. In the feed shows exactly where that cut falls on your caption.

Does the generator change anything else in my caption?

No. It removes spaces and tabs at the end of each line, drops empty lines at the very start and end, and fills every other empty line with the invisible character. Your words, emoji, hashtags and mentions stay exactly as you wrote them.

The formatting runs in your browser as you type, so the caption is never sent anywhere. The counters work on the formatted version, which is the text you will paste into Instagram.

What is an Instagram spacer, and do you need one?

An Instagram spacer is anything placed on an otherwise empty line to stop Instagram from removing it: a dot, a dash, an emoji, or an invisible character. The visible kinds work, but they add clutter, and a column of dots between paragraphs is easy to spot.

The invisible character this generator uses does the same job without showing anything, so the caption looks as if it simply has blank lines. You do not need to copy a spacer by hand or keep one in your notes app: paste the caption here and copy it back with every blank line filled.

The Blank lines kept counter shows how many empty lines were filled, so you can check the count matches the gaps you meant to leave. Two or more empty lines in a row are each kept, which is how to make a larger gap, for example before the hashtags at the end.

How are hashtags and mentions counted?

A hashtag counts when a # is followed by letters, numbers or underscores and at least one letter, so #weeknightdinner counts but #2026 on its own does not, since Instagram does not link a tag made only of numbers. A mention counts when an @ is followed by a username, but an email address such as hello@studio.com does not count.

When a count goes past Instagram's limit, 5 hashtags, 20 mentions or 2,200 characters, the counter is highlighted so you can trim before you post. If you need five tags that fit the post, the Instagram hashtag generator suggests sets of exactly five.

Can you use the formatted caption on Facebook, Threads or LinkedIn?

Yes. The copied caption is plain text, so it pastes into any app. Those apps generally keep blank lines on their own, so the invisible characters are not needed there, but they show as empty space and do no harm.

The limits shown here are Instagram's, so check the other platform's own limits before you post. For LinkedIn, where bold and italic text and post length matter more, the LinkedIn text formatter is built for that feed.

Questions

How do you add line breaks in an Instagram caption?
Write the caption with empty lines where you want space, paste it into this Instagram Line Break Generator and press Copy caption. Each empty line gets an invisible character, so Instagram keeps the break when you post.
How do I add space before hashtags in an Instagram caption?
Leave an empty line between the last sentence and the hashtags, paste the caption here and press Copy caption. The empty line gets an invisible character, so the gap holds, and the Hashtags counter shows how many you have out of 5. For a set of five that fits the post, try the Instagram Hashtag Generator.
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
2,200 characters, including spaces, line breaks and emoji. The feed shows roughly the first 125 before "more", so put the line that matters most at the start.
Does the invisible line break character count toward the limit?
Yes. Each blank line holds one invisible character, which counts toward the 2,200. The Characters count here already includes them, so the number you see is the number that matters.
Is there a line break copy and paste for Instagram?
The character that keeps a blank line is U+2800, the Braille blank. Rather than copying it by hand into every empty line, paste your caption here and press Copy caption to get it with every blank line filled.
Why does my Instagram caption still lose its spacing?
Usually because the caption was edited after pasting and a blank line lost its invisible character, or because another app, such as a scheduler, cleaned the text before posting. Paste the caption here again, copy it, and paste it straight into Instagram.
Does this work for Reels and carousel captions?
Yes. The spacing is part of the caption text, so it works for posts, Reels and carousels alike. The same 2,200-character and 5-hashtag limits apply to all three.
Will the invisible character show on other people's phones?
No. It is U+2800, the Braille blank, a standard Unicode character that current phones and browsers draw as empty space. Readers see a blank line, not a symbol.
