How it works

What is the Website to Subreddits?

Website to Subreddits is a free tool that finds the subreddits where your customers talk, starting from your website's address. It reads your homepage, works out what the business does and what its customers care about, searches Reddit for those topics, and ranks the subreddits where they come up most.

How to use the Website to Subreddits

  1. In Website, enter your domain, such as spyc.ai. The homepage works best.
  2. Press Find subreddits.
  3. Read the line at the top: what the tool understood your business to be, and the topics it searched Reddit for.
  4. Go through the ranked subreddits and open the example threads to judge the fit.
  5. If the topics look off, run the Subreddit Finder with your own keywords instead.

How does it find subreddits from a website?

It reads your homepage's title, description, headings and copy, and an AI model summarises what the business offers and who for. From that it names your category in the words a buyer would search for, and three problems your customers discuss, phrased the way they would phrase them. Each of those is searched on Reddit, and the subreddits are ranked by how many matching threads they hold and how often people recommend them.

The summary and the topics are shown above the results, so you can see why each subreddit is there. If the summary is wrong, the homepage is probably not saying clearly what you do, which is worth knowing in itself.

The pages that read best say in the first heading what the product is and who it is for, use a meta description that a stranger would understand, and describe the problem before the features. If your homepage leads with a slogan, try entering a product or features page instead, which usually says more plainly what you sell.

Why search for customer problems instead of the product?

Because almost nobody on Reddit names a product category the way its website does. A team that sells scheduling software finds its customers in threads about missed appointments, no-shows and endless emails to agree a time, not in threads that say "scheduling software". A meal-kit company finds them in threads about cooking on a budget after work.

Searching the problems finds the subreddits where buyers are before they know what to buy, which is where a helpful answer earns the most goodwill. The tool also searches your category by name, so the subreddits where people compare products directly come up as well.

Broad or niche subreddits: which are right for you?

Broad subreddits such as r/smallbusiness or r/productivity reach many people with many different needs. They are good for visibility and for learning how a wide audience describes the problem, but a post there competes with hundreds of others a day, and promotion is usually tightly restricted.

Niche subreddits, named after a specific job, tool or situation, reach far fewer people who share your customer's exact problem. They are where detailed questions get asked and where one useful reply can be read for months. Most businesses do best with two or three niche communities to take part in regularly and one or two broad ones to post their best material in.

What to do once you have the list

Spend time in the top few subreddits before posting anything. Read the rules, sort by Top for the past month to see which posts do well, and notice the questions that keep coming up. Then answer some of them where you genuinely know the answer, as yourself, without links. Most subreddits remove promotion from accounts that only show up to promote, and their members remember who helped.

When you do post, write for the subreddit rather than your company: what you learned, what you built and why, or a question the community can answer. The Reddit Post Title Generator writes titles that fit a named subreddit, and the Reddit Leads Finder finds threads where someone is asking for a product like yours right now.

How are the subreddits ranked?

By how strongly your customers' topics show up in each one, not by subscriber count. The tool runs four searches, your category plus three customer problems, and scores every subreddit the results touch. Each matching thread counts twice. Each time a result names the subreddit as a place to go, shown as recommended a number of times, counts once more. A subreddit whose own front page comes up for one of your topics gets a bonus on top.

That favours communities where the conversation actually happens over communities that are merely big. A subreddit with two million members that mentions your problem once a year ranks below a small one where people ask about it every week. Each result lists its matching threads and how often it was recommended, so you can see what put it on the list, and up to twelve subreddits are shown.

If you want the biggest communities in a field instead, Reddit's own search lists member counts next to each community, but size says little about whether your customers are there. Use the two together: this list for fit, member counts for reach.

How do you check a subreddit is worth your time?

Open it and look at three things: how recent the newest posts are, how many comments a typical post gets, and what the rules say about self-promotion. A subreddit where the latest posts are weeks old, or where posts sit with no replies, will not reward the effort, however well it matches your topic.

The example threads under each result help here. They show real questions from that community with their comment counts, so you can tell at a glance whether people are asking what your product answers and whether anyone replies. Read the rules and the sidebar before posting, because many communities ban links, require a flair, or allow promotion only in a weekly thread.

Then check how the community already talks about you and your competitors. The Reddit brand analyzer shows what Reddit says about a brand, which tells you whether you are walking into a friendly room or a sceptical one.

How do you find subreddits on the Reddit app?

Type a topic into the search bar at the top of the Reddit app or website, then switch the results to communities. You get subreddits whose names and descriptions match the words you typed, which works well when you already know what the community would be called.

It works less well for customer problems, because a community about freelance bookkeeping may not use the words your customers type. That gap is what this tool fills: it starts from your website and searches the problems as well as the category. To search the threads themselves, with filters for a subreddit and a time range, use Reddit search. The communities listed in a subreddit's sidebar are another good lead, since moderators often point to related ones there.

Keep a short list as you go. For each subreddit you are considering, note its rules on links and promotion, the kind of post that does well, and two or three recent questions you could answer. Running this tool again after you change your homepage, or on a product page for a different line of business, often surfaces communities the first run missed, because the topics it searches come from the page you enter. Compare the two lists and keep the subreddits that appear on both, since those sit closest to what your customers actually discuss.

Questions

How do I find subreddits for my business?
Enter your website here. You get up to twelve subreddits ranked by how much your customers' topics are discussed in each, with example threads.
What does it read from my website?
The homepage's title, meta description, headings and visible text. It does not follow links or read other pages.
What if my website has little text on it?
The tool needs some copy on the homepage to understand the business. If there is too little, use the Subreddit Finder and type a few words about what you do.
How is this different from the Subreddit Finder?
The Subreddit Finder searches the keywords you type. This tool works out the keywords from your website first, including the customer problems you might not think to search for.
Is my website stored?
No. The page is read once to run the search and is not kept.
Is this tool free?
Yes, with a free spyc account. You can run it twice an hour.
Why is a subreddit on the list that seems unrelated?
Usually because one of the searched topics also means something else. Read the line at the top, which shows what the tool understood and what it searched for. If a topic is off, run the Subreddit Finder with your own wording.
Does it work for any website?
It works for most sites with readable text on the homepage. A site that only builds its text with JavaScript after the page loads can look almost empty to the tool. In that case, enter a page with more plain text, or use the Subreddit Finder.
