Twitter Engagement Rate Calculator

Work out engagement rate from your own numbers, or scan a public account's recent posts.

How it works

What is the Twitter Engagement Rate Calculator?

The Twitter Engagement Rate Calculator is a free tool that works out engagement rate for X posts in two ways. Type a post's numbers to get its rate by impressions and by followers, each graded A to D, or scan a public profile to see the median rate across its recent original posts and its best post.

How to use the Twitter Engagement Rate Calculator

  1. Under Work it out from a post's numbers, enter Impressions and Followers, then the post's Likes, Reposts, Replies and Bookmarks. Quotes is optional.
  2. Read the two rates as you type: By impressions and By followers, each with a grade from A to D.
  3. To benchmark a whole account, go to Scan a public profile, enter an @handle or an x.com link and press Scan profile.
  4. Read the median rate by views and by followers across the account's recent original posts, the averages beside them, and the best post by interactions.

How is Twitter engagement rate calculated?

Engagement rate is engagements divided by a base, times 100. This calculator counts likes, reposts, replies, bookmarks and quotes as engagements, and works it out against two bases: impressions, which X shows on a post as views, and followers.

The two answer different questions. Rate by impressions says how well a post held the people who saw it. Rate by followers says how much of the audience it moved. A post shown well beyond the account's followers can score high on one and low on the other. For a thread, the thread retention calculator shows how many readers got past the first post.

What is a good engagement rate on X?

X does not publish an official benchmark, so any threshold is a rule of thumb. By impressions, this calculator grades 3% and above as A (Excellent), 1% and above as B (Good), 0.5% and above as C (Average), and anything lower as D (Below average). By followers, the bands move with account size: under 10,000 followers an A needs 4%, and over a million it needs 0.4%.

Rates fall as accounts grow, because a small, focused following interacts more per head than a large one. Compare an account with others of a similar size, not with the biggest accounts in its field.

Why does the profile scan use the median?

One viral post can pull an average far above what a typical post does. The median is the middle post of the sample, so it describes a typical post rather than an outlier.

The scan shows both. When the average sits well above the median, a few standout posts are carrying the account, and the best post shown underneath is usually one of them. For posting cadence and content mix beside these rates, run the handle through the Twitter Analyzer.

Why is my rate different from X's own analytics?

X's analytics for an account owner counts engagements that nobody else can see, such as link clicks, profile clicks and taps to expand a post. This calculator uses only the five counts shown publicly on every post: likes, reposts, replies, bookmarks and quotes. Its rate is usually lower than the one X shows the owner, and that is expected.

Pick one version and stick to it when you compare your own posts. When you compare your account with someone else's, use the public version, because their private numbers are not available to you and the scan reads both accounts the same way.

How do you improve your engagement rate on X?

Start with the best post the profile scan shows and ask what made it different: the topic, the format, a question at the end, or a strong opinion people wanted to answer. Then write more posts like it and fewer like the ones far below the median.

Replies count as engagements here, so posts that invite an answer tend to score higher than announcements. Answer the replies you get, since each one gives readers another reason to come back. Timing helps a post get its first readers, and Best Time to Tweet shows the hours when the account's own posts have done best.

Is engagement rate worked out the same way on Instagram or TikTok?

The idea is the same on every platform: engagements divided by a base, times 100. What changes is which actions count and which base is public. An X post shows its views to everyone, so a rate by impressions is possible for any account. Instagram does not show reach on someone else's post, so rates for other accounts there are usually worked out against followers.

Use a calculator built for the platform rather than one number across all of them. The Instagram engagement rate calculator gives a rate by followers, and by reach when you have a post's reach from your own insights.

Questions

How to calculate Twitter engagement rate?
Add a post's likes, reposts, replies, bookmarks and quotes, divide by its impressions, and multiply by 100. Divide by followers instead for the rate by followers. This calculator does both as you type.
What is a good engagement rate on Twitter?
A good engagement rate on Twitter is 1% or more of impressions, which this calculator grades B. There is no official X benchmark, and smaller accounts tend to post higher rates than large ones, so compare against accounts of a similar size.
What is a high engagement rate on Twitter?
A high engagement rate on Twitter is 3% or more, which this calculator grades A (Excellent). Rates that high are more common on small, focused accounts and on single posts than across the recent posts of a large account.
What counts as an engagement on X?
In this calculator, an engagement is a like, a repost, a reply, a quote or a bookmark: the interactions X shows on every public post. Views are not engagements. They are the base the rate by impressions is divided by.
Do I need to connect my X account?
No. The manual calculator works on the numbers you type, and the profile scan reads public posts from a handle. Neither asks for your X password or for permission to act on your account.
