Twitter Username Checker
Whether a handle is valid and free, with alternatives when it is taken.
How it works
What is the Twitter Username Checker?
The Twitter Username Checker is a free tool that tells you whether an X handle is valid and free to register. Enter the handle you want and it returns Available, Looks available, Taken or Unavailable, the last meaning X is holding it back, and checks close alternatives, such as adding hq or get, at the same time.
How to use the Twitter Username Checker
- Type the handle you want into Handle you want. The @ is optional.
- Press Check handle.
- Read the verdict: Available, Looks available, Taken or Unavailable, with a sentence that explains it.
- If it is taken, look down Alternatives for a close variant that is free, then claim it on X.
What are the rules for an X username?
A new X handle needs 5 to 15 characters, made of letters, numbers and underscores. No spaces, dots or dashes. It cannot contain the words Twitter or Admin.
Handles are not case-sensitive, so @BuildWithFocus and @buildwithfocus are the same handle. The checker applies these rules before it looks the handle up, and tells you which one a handle breaks.
What do the results mean?
Available means the handle is free to register right now. Looks available means no public account uses it, and signup is where you confirm it. Taken means an account already has it.
Unavailable means X is holding the handle back, usually because it is reserved or belongs to a suspended account. It may never come free, so pick one of the alternatives.
What if the Twitter username I want is taken?
The checker tries up to six close variants at the same time: your handle with hq, app, an underscore or io added to the end, and with get or the added to the front. Where a variant would run past 15 characters, your handle is shortened to make room, so every suggestion is a legal length. Each variant that gets an answer is listed with its own verdict.
If none of them suit you, try a shorter form of the name, a word for what you do, or your name with a role, and check again. Changing an existing account's handle keeps its followers and its numeric user ID, which the X ID converter shows.
How accurate is a Twitter username checker?
This one asks X's own signup check first, the same check X runs when you type a handle into its signup form, so Available, Taken and Unavailable come from X itself. That check also tells a taken handle apart from one X is holding back, which a simple profile lookup cannot.
When the signup check does not answer, the tool falls back to looking for a public profile with that handle. Finding one means Taken. Finding none gives Looks available, because a handle can be held by a suspended or deactivated account that has no public profile. Treat Looks available as a strong maybe, and confirm it when you claim the handle.
How do you claim a handle once it shows as available?
Claim it straight away, because nobody can reserve a handle and another person can take it at any moment. For a new account, enter the handle during signup. For an account you already have, change it in Settings and privacy, under Your account, Account information, Username.
Changing the handle moves your followers, posts and numeric user ID with you. Links to your old handle stop pointing at your profile, so update your website, email signature and other profiles. Once the old handle is released, someone else can register it.
If the same name matters on other platforms, their rules differ: Instagram usernames can run to 30 characters and allow periods, and Reddit usernames run from 3 to 20 characters and allow hyphens. The Instagram username generator and the Reddit username generator suggest names that fit each one.
Do inactive Twitter accounts free up their usernames?
Sometimes, but not on a schedule you can rely on. X's inactive account policy lets it remove accounts that go a long time without a login, and a removed account's handle can become available again. X does not announce when it releases one.
If the handle you want belongs to an account that looks abandoned, check it again from time to time. A result that moves from Taken to Unavailable usually means the account was suspended or removed but X is still holding the name back.
Questions
- How to check if Twitter username is available?
- Enter the username in this checker and press Check handle. It says whether the handle is valid, whether it is free or taken, and checks a few close alternatives at the same time.
- Can you reserve a Twitter username?
- X offers no way to reserve a handle without using it. To hold one, register an account with it, or switch an account you already have to it in your settings.
- How many characters can a Twitter username have?
- A Twitter username can have up to 15 characters, and a new one needs at least 5. Only letters, numbers and underscores are allowed.
- Does checking a Twitter username notify the owner?
- No. The checker only asks whether a handle is free, the same question X's signup form asks. Nothing is sent to the account that holds it.
- Why does the checker say Looks available instead of Available?
- Looks available means X's signup check did not answer, and no public profile uses the handle. It is probably free, but a suspended account could still hold it, so confirm when you sign up.
